About Abstract Art paintings vs Energy Art paintings

Abstract art paintings don't try to mirror reality. It is the feeling that is trying to be expressed. But as mentioned on other pages, Energy Art is not abstract art, it is Energy Art. There are special rules when making an abstract painting. But for Energy Art paintings there are no rules, it is free, it is good "leaving" the mind and not thinking, only doing and feeling when painting. (The word "abstract" is used here at Energy Art Gallery because it is easier to understand what an abstract painting is than what an Energy Art painting is)

Traditional view on abstract art:

What is abstract art?
Many people look at abstract art pieces with know real understanding of what they're looking at. All they see is splashes of colors or strange combinations of shapes, and not anything they recognize as real. And because of that, they often say they "don't like" abstract art.

Fortunately, this is something that can be changed. People can learn to appreciate, and even like, abstract art by further understanding it. And the first step to understanding this art-form is to learn what, exactly, it is.

The definition of abstract art
Art is very subjective, but from an academic position, it can be defined. This art-form is a genre of art that focuses more on internal form than pictoral representations. But what does that mean?

This art-form uses the individual elements of art, such as colors, lines, and shapes, to create art. However, these elements of art don't come together into recognizable pictures. In abstract art, for example, a painting of a chair doesn't look like a chair. Instead, this art-form focuses on things like emotions or abstract experiences for their content. Many times, artists use this art-form to capture the intangible on their canvases.

The composition of abstract art
The composition of this art-form can be just as confusing as its definition. After all, what makes up pieces of art that don't have pictoral representations?

This is very varied. This art-form can be complex, with lots of shapes, colors, and lines, or very simple, using a single color across an entire canvas.

Much of the composition of this art-form is determined by the internal aspect of the artist. What he or she wants to convey through these elements of art is what ends up on the canvas. For that reason, this art-genre is often described as more personal than other genres, particularly in relationship to the artist.

The reaction to abstract art
Because this art doesn't rely on recognizable figures and pictures, viewers' reactions to it are much more emotional and intellectual. When people look at abstract art, they often use their "gut reactions" to the piece to reveal how they feel about it.

This goes along with the emotional aspect of the composition of this art, as well. In effect, the artist can connect with the viewer through a shared emotion in the production and reaction to a particular piece.

The emotional interpretation of the art may be why some people struggle with it. Because they have to take more than a moment to determine what it is, they feel they don't "get it."

Knowing what, exactly, this art is helps people better understand it. And though this art-form can be confusing to someone outside or new to the art world, it's not as confusing as it may seem. By just knowing what, exactly, people mean by the term "abstract art," you can take one step closer to understanding and appreciating it. And from there, you may even discover that you like abstract art!
